News and Upcoming Events:
WPLM Goes Solar
Last year the Village installed a 24.84 kW solar panel system on the roof of the Community Center. The savings on the building's utility bills are already adding up. Compared to last year's bills, the Village saved $300 to $400 each month in February, March, April, and May, and the savings will be even more impressive this summer. The system will pay for itself in less than 5 years through the combination of state and federal incentives and the money saved on utility bills. The panels are expected to last a minimum of 25 years and save taxpayers over $120,000!
WPLM plans to follow in the Village's footsteps by installing a 24.6 kW system of 60 panels along the peak of WPLM's metal roof this fall. The panels will offset about 70% of WPLM's electricity needs. WPLM is able to afford the panels because of federal and state incentives that will reimburse over $44,000 of the system's cost. Just as with the Village's system, the panels will save taxpayers money in the long-term through savings on power bills. WPLM will be diverting money from Ameren bills and putting it towards services, programming, and saving for long-term needs. In addition, during energy spills, otherwise known as sunny summer days, the solar panels will produce more energy than WPLM needs. At those times the extra energy will go back on the electrical grid. Ameren will credit WPLM for that power at the same rate customers pay, which is a system called net metering. By energizing the solar panels this fall, WPLM will be locking in the current payback advantages with Ameren before the net metering laws change in January 1, 2025.
Updated: WPLM was one of five libraries to receive the 2024 EBSCO Solar Grant to help pay for the solar panels to be installed!
